Why We Built Samsø Labs

Why are we taught so much about the climate crisis — but not how to fix the systems behind it?

That question stayed with us after visiting Samsø, a small Danish island where neighbors came together to power their community with 100% renewable energy in just ten years.

Back home, we noticed the gap. Students were learning the science, but not what to do with it. We needed something different.

Samsø Labs is that something.

A place where students explore climate solutions that connect — with their creativity, ideas, and passions. Some start with science. Others with art, tech, fashion, or a question that won’t go away.

Because every solution starts with one spark.

What if I could help fix this?

There’s no one path here.

You might teach younger kids, build projects, or redesign your school’s sustainability plan. And the impact doesn’t stop with you — it spreads.

A Note from Anika

Hi! I’m Anika Agarwal, a high school freshman in the Bay Area and the founder of Samsø Labs.

I started this project with a simple belief: Students don’t have to wait to lead.

We can start now — with curiosity, creativity, and the courage to imagine something better.

That belief has guided me in everything from community projects and creating recyclable art to my research at the Lawrence Hall of Science, where I studied how environmental injustice — like lead poisoning, zoning laws, and toxic exposures — impacts different neighborhoods.

I kept noticing that we talk a lot about climate problems — but not enough about climate solutions.

And we rarely show students how their talents — whether in science, design, or storytelling — can be part of the answer.

To me, climate literacy should be as fundamental as digital literacy.

And climate skills aren’t just about facts or formulas — they’re a mindset. It’s about thinking in systems, asking better questions, and learning how to create change with others.

I don’t think hope is naive — I think it’s strategic.

The stories we tell about the future can shape what becomes possible.

And I’d love for you to help write the next chapter.

Meet the Team

Get Involved. Make an Impact.

You don’t have to start a nonprofit to make a difference. You just have to start something.

Samsø Labs is growing a community of student leaders who want to share climate solutions—in schools, clubs, libraries, and neighborhoods.

What could you do?

  • Teach climate science to younger students

  • Bring Innovation Labs to your school or library

  • Launch a recycled art exhibit

  • Host a climate careers showcase

Whether you’re building leadership skills, earning service hours, or just doing something that matters—this is for you.

No experience needed. Just curiosity and the drive to begin.
